There are many things we can do to keep our home asthma "friendly".  Below is a list of things known to trigger asthma attacks and how to deal with them.

1Second-hand smoke.

This is perhaps the most common asthma trigger and possibly one of the easiest to correct.  Here’s how to do it: QUIT SMOKING NOW!  If you can’t quit, smoke outside and try to refrain from smoking in the car.

2.  Dust Mites.

Dust mites are microscopic pests that live just about anywhere in your home where there is fabric.  Change your sheets once a week at the minimum, use dust proof and allergen resistant pillow covers, and vacuum regularly to keep these unseen pests under control.  Also, dust with a damp cloth rather than a duster, which throws particles into the air.

3.  Pets.

As much as we love them, our pets can also be culprits in triggering allergen induced asthma attacks. Skin flakes, fur, urine, feces, and saliva are all asthma triggers. When your beloved household companion passes away, consider not replacing it.  Until then, clean frequently.

4.  Insects and Vermin.

Cockroaches, mice and rats are prime targets in an effort to make your home asthma friendly.  Flecks of shells, skin and waste matter can build up over time.  They can cause serious illnesses in addition to asthma.  The simplest way to manage this is to keep food in plastic storage containers, clean all spills promptly and regularly clean counter tops and floors.

5.  Pest Control.

Chemicals and poisons easily circulate through the air.  They are intended to spread easily so they can be effective.  Consider alternative forms of pest control such as traps.  If you must use a spray, be sure to have adequate ventilation.

6.  Mold.

Mold can be found in many homes.  The problem with mold is it is sometimes well hidden behind walls, under sinks and tubs, and even under your floor or carpet.  Maintenance is the key in eradicating mold.  Fix leaky plumbing, wash and dry hard surfaces thoroughly.

Other states may have similar services.  Type into your search enging "quit smoking" and your state.  See what comes up.

Don't want to quit?

Ask yourself which you love more.  Cigarettes or your children?

When Michael would see family members or the parents of his friends smoking, he would confront them by asking: "Why are you smoking? Don't you know that can kill you?"  Pretty smart for a child.
