Our Story
On January 30th 2008, 7-year-old Michael De Luca went to bed. He had just returned from a weekend trip with his parents and was excited to tell all of his friends in school where he was, instead of in class. A few hours after going to bed he went to his parents room and complained of an asthma attack, his first in nearly 3 years. Michael's asthma was severe as a toddler so Mom and Dad were prepared and fell into the well known routine of keeping Michael calm and giving him his medication. He responded well so everybody relaxed and went to bed. What happened next would change the De Luca's forever.
Michael's symptoms returned far more aggressively than when they first presented. Young Michael's airway spasmed and constricted, eliminating his ability to breathe. His parents sprang to action, calling 911 and beginning emergency respirations; the sum of which was to buy a few days with Michael as he lay dying in the hospital. Michael Alexander, the only child of Erica and Michael De Luca, passed away on February 2nd, 2008. Just one month after his birthday.
Through this overwhelming loss Michael's legacy continues. Like the mythical Phoenix, which rose from the ashes after being engulfed and destroyed, Michael lives on. As an organ donor he has saved a life and promoted research. As an example, he has inspired people to re-evaluate their lives. Through this tragedy his family has found the strength to fight for research into the disease that claimed their son. All in an effort to find solace within their new lives, bereft of their boy.
Please help the De Luca's make a difference in the lives of asthmatic children and their families all across America.
Michael loved Aikido. Martial arts are known to be beneficial to children with certain types of asthma. Be sure to check with your child's pediatrician before they begin any new form of strenuous activity. The Michael De Luca Memorial Asthma Research Fund
